Research in London
I
now undertake research at all the London record repositories as
well as those in Kent. The National Archives at Kew, London, is
the repository for all the government records, including those relating
to the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines, Merchant
Seamen, Chelsea and Greenwich Pensioners, Crown employees, civil
servants, records of various law courts, non-conformist records,
records of immigrants and emigrants, plus numerous taxation records,
maps, etc.. Currently only about 5% of these records are available
online so a researcher on the ground can be essential.
I also
regularly visit the London Metropolitan Archives, Guildhall Library,
Westminster Archives and all the smaller London borough Archive
offices.
My
hourly rate for research in London is £30.00, plus postage
and copies. As far as copies go, the big advantage at the National
Archives is that the taking of digital photographs of documents
is freely permitted, enabling copies of virtually all material to
be obtained if required. This can be sent as attachments to Emails,
or copied to a CD and mailed.
